Global health initiatives
Canada has considerable research strength in the global health domain. Building on this strength, CIHR, with the support and collaboration of Canadian and international partners, has engaged in a wide range of activities to advance global health research, capacity building and knowledge translation in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
Global health is a cross-cutting theme across all of CIHR’s 13 institutes and is currently championed by Dr. Steven Hoffman, who is also CIHR’s Scientific Director for Population and Public Health. The following is a list of CIHR’s current Global Health Initiatives.
Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases (GACD)
CIHR has partnered with international health research funders to form the Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases (GACD). The aim of the Alliance is to fund, develop and facilitate innovative research collaborations between low- and middle-income and high-income countries in one of their five research areas: heart disease, diabetes, lung disease, mental illness and cancer.
The GACD International secretariat is hosted by University College London (UCL) Institute for Global Health.
