Shalene Curtis-Micallef was appointed Deputy Minister of Health
, effective August 19, 2024.
, effective January 19, 2026. She most recently served as Deputy Minister of Justice and Deputy Attorney General of Canada, a role she held since February 13, 2023.
Prior to this appointment, he was Deputy Minister of Finance and, concurrently, Chair of the Ontario Financing Authority, Government of Ontario, since 2018.
Over the course of her career at Justice Canada, Shalene held a range of senior leadership positions, including Assistant Deputy Minister (ADM) of the Tax Law Services Portfolio, Deputy ADM for the Policy Sector, and Executive Director and Senior General Counsel within the Health Portfolio. In these roles, she contributed to the advancement of significant legislative reforms including in the areas of cannabis legalization and regulation, tobacco control, food safety modernization and public health. She began her career as tax litigation counsel in the Tax Law Services Portfolio.
Deputy Minister Orencsak has held other senior leadership positions including Deputy Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Development, Government of Ontario from 2017-2018. From 2016-2017, he was Partner, Government and Public Sector, and National Leader, Public Policy and Fiscal Innovation, at EY (Ernst and Young).
Shalene completed her legal studies at Osgoode Hall Law School, is a member of the Law Society of Ontario, and also holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Ottawa.
He has held other positions with the Government of Ontario, including Chair of the Public Service Commission from 2015-2016; Deputy Minister, Secretary of the Treasury Board and Secretary of the Management Board of Cabinet, Treasury Board Secretariat from 2014-2016; and Deputy Minister of Government Services in 2014. Prior to these appointments, he was Associate Deputy Minister of Finance from 2011-2014 and Assistant Deputy Minister of Finance from 2009-2011.
He holds Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees from the University of Toronto.
